Ukraine’s Aonishiki Becomes Sumo Champion in Japan
In a historic achievement, Danylo Yavhusishyn, known as Aonishiki, has become the first Ukrainian to win an elite sumo tournament. Arriving in Japan at 18 amid the turmoil from the Russian invasion, Aonishiki, now 21, clinched the Emperor’s Cup, also marking him as the first European victor in nearly eight years.
His remarkable tournament in Fukuoka ended with a record of 12 wins and 3 losses, culminating in a championship playoff victory against Yokozuna grand champion Hoshoryu. Aonishiki emphasized that this triumph is just the beginning, as he’s on track for a historic promotion to Ozeki rank. With a strong mix of unique techniques, he has captured fans’ hearts in Japan and beyond, paving the way for a potential future as sumo’s first European Yokozuna.
