Fraud Victims ‘Failing’ in the Justice System
Fraud victims are currently underserved by the justice system, according to charities. In the year leading up to June, there were 1.2 million recorded fraud cases in England and Wales, but fewer than 13,000 led to prosecution. Wayne Stevens from Victim Support highlighted that victims often don’t receive adequate support. Joan Holdaway, an 85-year-old fraud victim, lost £1,000 in an investment scam, suffering immense emotional distress. While efforts such as the mandatory reimbursement requirement exist, many victims remain uninformed and unsupported. The Home Office plans to unveil a new fraud strategy to better protect victims in the future.
