I Volunteer at the Baby Bank That Helped Me
Kelly’s Journey with Family Matters Dorset
In a bustling warehouse situated in an industrial estate, a dedicated team of volunteers is sorting through an array of donated items for a cherished Dorset baby bank. Among them is Kelly Fahy from Weymouth, who is passionate about giving back after her own family benefitted from the support of Family Matters Dorset.
– Support for Families: Located on Granby, this baby bank provides essential items such as clothing, equipment, and toys for babies and preschool-aged children.
– Community Impact: The Weymouth and Portland Baby Bank serves as one of 75 collection points participating in the BBC Radio Solent Soapbox Appeal across Hampshire, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight throughout January. These donations are later distributed to various charities and community groups.
Kelly’s Personal Experience
Nearly five years ago, Kelly first turned to the baby bank for help when her daughter was just five months old.
– Facing Hard Times: During the COVID pandemic, with her partner laid off, they faced financial struggles and sought out this invaluable resource. It was incredible. We needed nappies, baby milk, clothes, and even some toys,” she recalled. “Everything was there, including teething rings and other essentials.”
– Giving Back: Inspired by the support she received, Kelly felt a strong urge to contribute. What better way to do it than by volunteering for them? she said, reflecting on her new role.
Call to Action for Donations
Kelly encourages the community to contribute to the ongoing need for essential baby items through the BBC Radio Solent Soapbox Appeal:
– Needed Donations: Items such as baby wipes, nappies, new toiletries (like shampoo and toothpaste), and cleaning supplies (including washing up liquid and sponges) are highly appreciated.
– Community Support: We have all hit hard times, and it takes the community to rally round and help each other, Kelly emphasized.
Last year’s appeal resulted in thousands of items donated and successfully distributed to those in need.
