A food charity has made a significant impact in Kirklees by delivering nearly 100,000 meals over the past year, saving struggling families an estimated £740,000. The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) is dedicated to its mission of making everyday essentials affordable, benefiting more than 8,500 members in the borough.

Food Hubs and Healthy Eating

The Bread and Butter Thing operates 10 food hubs strategically located in schools, community centers, and church halls. These hubs not only promote healthy eating—comprising 80% fresh fruit, vegetables, and chilled products—but also foster community connections.

A spokesperson emphasized, Our hubs make nutritious, affordable food available while reducing waste and bringing communities together.

Community Engagement

In 2025, local volunteers dedicated 17,907 hours to support weekly sessions, with no referral requirements, allowing everyone to join and benefit from the program.

Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Public Health at Kirklees Council, remarked, Kirklees residents who shop with The Bread and Butter Thing saved a combined total of over £741,000—an essential relief during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

A Message from Leadership

Vic Harper, chief executive of The Bread and Butter Thing, highlighted the importance of these services amidst rising costs: Many households are only just keeping their heads above water; it only takes a small, unexpected expense to tip the balance.

She further noted, Our hubs in Kirklees provide local families with a space to share ideas, access good food, and support one another. Harper expressed gratitude for the volunteers, stating, We couldn’t do any of this without our brilliant volunteers; their dedication brings the hubs to life and makes a real difference.
