Agencies, New Delhi: The Union Budget for 2026-27 has earmarked an impressive ₹1471 crore for the enhancement of forensic capabilities, along with various initiatives aimed at ensuring justice is both swift and accessible.

Key Allocations in the Forensic Sector

Forensic Modernization: ₹500 crore has been dedicated to modernizing forensic capabilities under the schemes focused on women’s safety.
Central Forensic Science Laboratories: An allocation of ₹14 crore is set aside for upgrading these laboratories, which includes the establishment of a National Forensic Data Centre.
National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme: ₹130 crore has been allocated to strengthen the national forensic infrastructure by establishing multiple off-campus National Forensic Science Universities (NFSUs) and additional Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs).
NFSU Support: The NFSU has received ₹145 crore to support its academic, administrative, research, and infrastructural efforts.

Comprehensive Development Through Technology

Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS): ₹550 crore is allocated to create a seamless digital platform that allows for efficient data sharing among police, courts, prosecution, prisons, and forensic agencies.
Criminology and Forensic Science: ₹132.89 crore has been set aside in this category, marking a 34% increase from last year’s revised estimate of ₹99 crore. This funding supports administrative costs and modernization efforts for the Directorate of Forensic Science and CFSLs, with a particular focus on human resource development and research initiatives.
Regional Laboratories and DNA Centers: The budget includes provisions for the establishment of regional forensic laboratories and DNA centers as part of its strategy to enhance forensic methodologies.
