JLR Sees Sales Recover After Cyber Attack

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a marked recovery in sales over the past quarter, following the resumption of production after a significant cyber attack. The UK’s largest car manufacturer confirmed that it sold 95,300 vehicles to dealers in the three months ending March 31, representing an impressive 61.1% increase compared to the previous quarter. Additionally, retail sales rose by 16.2% to 92,700 vehicles.

Impact of the Cyber Attack

The cyber attack, which occurred from September 1, caused a five-week halt in production across JLR’s plants in Solihull, Halewood, and Wolverhampton. Despite this setback, the company reported that production has now returned to normal levels. However, they faced another temporary production pause at the Solihull plant due to parts supply issues at the end of last month.

Year-on-Year Sales Comparison

While JLR’s quarterly recovery shows promising numbers, it’s important to note that sales to both consumers and dealers are down compared to the same period last year. The firm linked this decline to:

US tariffs impacting profitability
– Ongoing market challenges in China
– The deliberate wind-down of legacy Jaguar models

Specifically, retail sales fell by 14.3% year-on-year, while dealer sales dropped 14.5%, including a significant 23.1% decrease in the UK alone. In China, sales plummeted by 29.8%, reflecting the ongoing difficulties facing the Chinese market.

Conclusion

While JLR sees sales recover after a cyber attack, ongoing challenges, particularly in key markets like China and the effects of tariffs, pose ongoing hurdles. The company continues to navigate these complexities while striving for stability and growth in the automotive market.
