EV Grant Scheme Boost Worth £1.3bn Expected in Budget
The government is set to announce an additional £1.3bn to elevate the Electric Car Grant scheme in next week’s Budget. Launched in July to promote zero-emission vehicles, the scheme has already assisted 35,000 people in transitioning to EVs. However, initial reports indicate it hasn’t significantly drawn in new buyers.
Plans include funding for more charging points and solutions for those without driveways. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the long-term benefits of supporting EV sales for economic growth, especially noting manufacturing jobs tied to the Nissan Leaf. As the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars approaches, the push for EV accessibility intensifies, but a potential tax might also emerge for EV owners to maintain road infrastructure funding.
