‘A Miracle’: Officer Shot in Head During Bondi Attack Home from Hospital

A young police officer has returned home from the hospital after a harrowing incident during the Bondi Beach attack, marking what many are calling ‘a miracle.’

Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, only four months into his career, was on patrol at a Hanukkah event when two gunmen opened fire, injuring over 40 attendees and tragically claiming the lives of 15. The 22-year-old was struck in the head and shoulder, resulting in the loss of vision in one eye. However, his family has reported that he is now recovering at home.

– The family expressed their gratitude, stating, “As a family, we couldn’t ask for anything more—having our Jack home, especially for Christmas, truly feels like a miracle.” They extended their thanks to the public for their overwhelming support and praised the medical personnel for their exceptional care.

– While Constable Hibbert is now home, the family emphasized that he is still in recovery and will require continued support and space during this time.

– Remarkably, despite being injured, Constable Hibbert assisted festival attendees until he could no longer do so. His family shared how witnesses, including several of his colleagues, commended his bravery that night. “Jack moved toward people in need, not away from danger,” they noted.

– Hibbert was among two officers injured in the attack; the other, Constable Scott Dyson, 25, remains hospitalized as he recovers from his injuries.

Bondi Bravery: Community Response and Investigation

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon recently visited Constable Hibbert in the hospital, praising him as a positive young man.” He assured the community that the police force would support Hibbert and find appropriate duties for him upon his recovery.

– The attack has been deemed a terror incident, with police alleging that the suspected gunmen were inspired by Islamic State ideology, specifically targeting the Jewish festival.

Naveed Akram, 24, faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one of terror. His father, Sajid Akram, was shot and killed by police at the scene.

– Recent court documents revealed that the duo had meticulously planned the attack for months. Alarmingly, just two days before the shooting, they conducted reconnaissance in Bondi.

Community Reflection

The Bondi community continues to reel from the shock of this tragedy, having experienced two deadly attacks within two years. A minute’s silence was observed to honor the victims of the Bondi Beach attack, reinforcing the community’s resilience and support.

As Constable Hibbert heals at home, his story serves as a testament to courage in the face of danger, illustrating the profound impact of community support in the aftermath of such tragedies.
