Essential Needs, located in Harrogate, specializes in providing second-hand furniture and essential household items at affordable prices for those in need.

Essential Services Manager Lee Wright shared some unsettling realities:

Wright noted that demand for the charity’s offerings has surged over the past year. We’re seeing 10 to 15 new customers every week who come in seeking items they can’t afford elsewhere, he explained.

Adam Clarke, who recently moved into a property with the help of both organizations, stated, Having a home is the most important thing in life. Wright explained that the initial rise in demand for their services coincided with the cost of living crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This crisis drove up prices for oil, gas, and agricultural products, placing additional strain on vulnerable households. Despite the ongoing high demand, donations to Essential Needs have begun to dwindle.
People are holding on to their belongings longer than usual, Wright noted. We frequently have several people waiting for just one or two items as we notify them when new stock arrives.
This issue is particularly concealed in the seemingly affluent area of Harrogate. Though it’s often perceived as a wealthy location, that’s not the reality for everyone, Wright said. Many residents are paying high rents, leaving little money for essential items after covering their housing costs.
