Over 100 individuals found refuge at a mountain shrine in Japan after relentless snowfall rendered roads impassable.

– Approximately 130 people took shelter within the halls and lobbies of the Mitsumine Shrine in Saitama Prefecture on Friday. Access was cut off due to safety concerns, as confirmed by the local authority.
– Among the overnight guests were occupants from around 50 vehicles, all of whom remained healthy throughout their stay.

Heavy Snowfall Across Japan

Japan is currently experiencing severe winter weather conditions, with forecasts predicting an additional 40cm of snow in some regions on Saturday.
– In the last 72 hours, certain areas have received up to 80cm of snow, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
– The ongoing cold front is expected to continue bringing more snowfall.

There have been multiple incidents near Mitsumine Shrine, including vehicles losing traction on the icy roads, which prompted local police to enforce road closures.
– The region has seen about 4cm of snow accumulation, coupled with frigid temperatures dropping as low as -15°C.

About Mitsumine Shrine

Perched at an elevation of 1,110 meters (3,640 feet) in the mountains near Chichibu City, the Mitsumine Shrine stands as a significant site for Shinto worship.
– It is dedicated to the deities Izanami and Izanagi, who are credited with the creation of the Japanese islands.
– The shrine has a rich history, reportedly founded in the 1st Century by Prince Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a notable figure who was the son of Emperor Keikō.
