N Korea Cancels Pyongyang Marathon for Unspecified Reasons

North Korea has announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated Pyongyang Marathon, a decision conveyed by a tour agency associated with the event. British-based Koryo Tours, recognized as the official partner of the marathon, reported on Monday that it received notice from North Korea’s athletics association regarding this unexpected cancellation.

Key Details About the Cancellation

Announcement: Koryo Tours received confirmation from the athletics association. The official statement cited that the event is canceled due to some reasons.
Marathon’s History: Established in 1981, the marathon was originally intended to commemorate the birth of North Korea’s founding leader, Kim Il Sung. The 2026 edition was slated to occur on April 5.
International Involvement: The message from the athletics association’s general secretary expressed gratitude to all the Elite Marathoners and Amateur Runners of the world who are interested in the Pyongyang International Marathon. However, it offered no further details on the rationale behind the cancellation.

Implications for Runners

Koryo Tours indicated that it understands the decision is final and was made at a level beyond the event organizers. In light of this news, the company plans to seek further clarification on the reasons for the cancellation. They emphasized that neither the organizers nor event partners played a role in this decision. They stated:

– This announcement will be disappointing to many runners who had already registered or were planning to participate.

For those impacted, Koryo Tours, headquartered in Beijing, China, provides various marathon packages departing from Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenyang. Notably:

Cost: Packages start at €2,190 ($2,529; £1,894) for a stay of 2.5 nights in Pyongyang, which includes marathon entry, highlights of the capital, and more.
Refunds: All deposits will be refunded, but participants have the option to retain their deposit for a future event or another North Korea tour.

The Future of the Pyongyang Marathon

As of now, a date for the 2027 marathon has not been established. It is worth mentioning that the marathon had just returned in 2022 after a hiatus of five years due to the Covid pandemic. The event caters to both amateur and some professional athletes and features various race distances:

5km (3.1 miles)
10km (6.2 miles)
Half Marathon (21.1km; 13.1 miles)
Full Marathon (42.2km; 26.2 miles)

The cancellation of the Pyongyang Marathon not only impacts runners but also highlights the ongoing uncertainty surrounding events in North Korea. As the marathon celebrates both athleticism and culture, its absence is felt significantly within the global running community.
