Universal Basic Income (UBI)—a once-radical concept—is gaining renewed traction after a groundbreaking German study revealed it doesn’t disincentivize work. The Berlin-based non-profit Mein Grundeinkommen tracked 122 individuals over three years (June 2021 – May 2024), providing each with €1,200 ($1,365) per month, unconditionally.
Participants, aged 21 to 40, lived alone and earned between €1,100 and €2,600 monthly. The study aimed to assess how receiving guaranteed income affected their employment, mental health, education, and social involvement. Contrary to critics’ fears, recipients maintained full-time employment, working an average of 40 hours per week—identical to a control group that received no payments.
The findings debunk the common narrative that people stop working when given free money. “We find no evidence that people love doing nothing,” said Susann Fiedler, a professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, involved in the study.
Instead of reducing productivity, the income gave recipients the freedom to make positive life changes. Many changed jobs, enrolled in further education, or pursued volunteer work. Most notably, they reported greater satisfaction with their work and income, improved mental health, and increased feelings of autonomy and purpose.
These results echo previous experiments, like the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration in California, which provided $500 per month to lower-income residents. Similar conclusions were drawn: recipients showed better mental health outcomes and remained employed.
The German initiative also highlighted gender-specific benefits. Women in particular reported feeling a greater sense of freedom in their daily lives. Even with unchanged work hours, participants said they felt like they had more time for rest, personal development, and loved ones.
Matthew Johnson, a professor of public policy at Northumbria University in the UK, wasn’t surprised. “This study confirms growing evidence that we and others have long presented: there is no evidence that Basic Income reduces economic and labour market activity,” he stated.
Johnson and other researchers argue that UBI should be seen as an investment in long-term public health and economic resilience. “Reducing conditionality and ensuring people have enough money for the basics improves health and removes disincentives from engaging in work,” said Elliott Johnson, also from Northumbria.
The concept has powerful backers. Elon Musk has claimed universal income will become necessary as artificial intelligence replaces human labor. U.S. presidential candidate Andrew Yang made it a central theme in his 2020 campaign, proposing $1,000 monthly payments for every American adult.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, support for UBI surged across Europe. A 2020 Oxford University study found that 71% of Europeans favored the introduction of UBI.
In Germany, over 2 million people applied to join the Mein Grundeinkommen study, which was funded entirely by private donors. The organization has been running smaller UBI raffles for over a decade, and says more than 200,000 supporters fund their efforts through monthly donations.
As the economic landscape shifts with the rise of AI, climate challenges, and aging populations, UBI could become a vital pillar of the welfare state. The organization hopes future studies will expand to more representative population samples, helping shape long-term public policy.
For now, the evidence is clear: basic income doesn’t foster laziness—it offers a springboard to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
