Performer Describes Locking Eyes with Trump During Shooting Incident

A performer has shared a harrowing account of his experience ducking for cover alongside President Donald Trump during a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night.

The Moment of Terror

Oz Pearlman, a self-proclaimed mentalist, was interacting with Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt when shots rang out.
– I went down very quickly. And then the Secret Service brought President Trump down; I would say very effectively—but quite violently, Pearlman recounted to the BBC.
– He described being half a metre apart, face-to-face, with Trump as the sounds of gunfire echoed around them. I thought to myself, ‘We’re about to die.’

The Performance Interrupted

– At the time of the shooting, Pearlman was guessing the baby name Leavitt had chosen, writing it on a piece of paper just moments before the chaos unfolded.
– The footage from the event captured Pearlman standing with the paper behind the three VIPs, seated at an elevated table in the Washington Hilton.
– The timing of it was just so crazy because I was right in the midst of performing… I was trying to guess how many letters were in the baby’s name, he explained. As he revealed his guess, the sound of gunshots interrupted the performance.

The Secret Service Response

– Initially, Pearlman believed the agents were responding to a bomb threat due to their rapid movement toward the table. It didn’t feel like they were looking for a shooter. It felt like they were looking to stop something from happening, he added.
– Responding quickly, Pearlman went down very quickly, facing one direction while Trump was tackled in another. For one Mississippi, two Mississippi, I was looking directly into his eyes, thinking that I hope I’m not about to die.
– After approximately two seconds, the Secret Service successfully evacuated Trump, while Pearlman and two others crawled to safety.

Trump’s Reaction

In an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes the next day, Trump remarked that he wasn’t worried during the frightening ordeal. I understand life. We live in a crazy world, he stated. Reflecting on being led from the venue, he mentioned, I started walking with them [security]. I turned, and they said, ‘Please go down. Please go down on the floor.’ So I went down, and the First Lady went down also.

The Gunman’s Arrest

The suspected shooter, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from California, was arrested on site. Authorities reported that he had exchanged gunfire with security agents on the floor above where Trump was located. Following his apprehension, Allen revealed to officials that he aimed to shoot individuals within the Trump administration. He was subsequently charged with attempting to assassinate the president, along with related weapons offenses. As of now, Allen has not entered a plea.

Conclusion

The incident at the White House Correspondents’ dinner underscores the unpredictable nature of safety at high-profile events. Pearlman’s eye-locking moment with Trump amidst chaos provides a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by public figures. The attack has raised substantial questions regarding security measures in place for such events.
